Tools To Remove Weeds Between Pavers

Weeds are a very typical problem encountered by paver owners, especially on walkways and driveways. Although there are several tools to remove weeds between pavers, that isn’t always an easy task.

To be honest, it can be quite frustrating to see your investment gradually disappear into the vegetation. But the problems can go beyond the aesthetic point of view.

Over time, weeds can even cause damage to the surface of the pavers. Therefore, it’s not something that you can overlook. In this article, we will address this issue and guide you through the topic.

Why Weeds Grow Between Pavers?

Generally, weeds growing between pavers are sprouts of small seeds deposited between the joints. The grains get there by the wind, carried by rainwater, or transported by birds. Anyway, it’s almost impossible to prevent the seeds from being deposited there. When in contact with sand and water, grains find perfect conditions to sprout, with plenty of nutrients.

One of our suggestions is that you sweep with a broom the pavers’ surface, as it helps to remove any seeds recently deposited there. Another great way to narrow seeds from sprouting is by sealing the pavers. When in contact with pavers’ joint material, the sealer creates a substance similar to mortar. As a result, the areas between the pavers now offer an inhospitable environment for weed growth.

Why Weeds Between Pavers Are A Bad Thing?

But are weeds between pavers that much of a bad thing? Yes, they are. To begin with, from an aesthetic point of view, walkways, driveways, etc. look very messy and inelegant when covered by weeds. But the problem goes well beyond appearance. If you don’t control weed’s growth and don’t remove them, weeds can even cause damage to the pavers’ structure. Problems can range from pavers’ unevenness to cracks and break.

How Do You Get Rid Of Weeds Between Pavers?

It’s essential to remember that prevention is by far the best tool to get rid of weeds between pavers. Pavers’ sealer plays a crucial role in hindering weeds from sprouting between pavers. As long as the sealing is up to date, you’ll have much less incidence of weeds. But if that ship has already sailed, you will have to resort to some weeds removal methods or tools.

Which Tool Is Used To Remove Weeds Between Pavers?

Weed removing tools come in all sizes and shapes, so let’s just focus on the most common and used ones.

Gardena Hand Weeder

The Gardena Hand Weeder is probably the best tool to remove weeds between pavers, and probably the most popular in the market too. Gardena has three main features:

  • A slip-resistant grip;
  • A hardened stainless steel blade, which gives it even more durability and it’s also resistant to rust;
  • And a hook that allows you to remove rocks.

Thanks to its very sharp edge, Gardena doesn’t work just to remove weeds between pavers, as you can also remove any type of unwanted debris, such as moss.

Carrot Design Garden Weeding Tool

Another widely used tool is the Carrot Design Garden Weeding Tool, which, has three main features;

  • The first is its pointy end, which you use to drag it on the ground to cut the weed’s root. You can also use the sharpened tip to dig out the weeds from underneath;
  • The handle, which is beech hardwood, so it’s very durable;
  • And finally, the tool also has a blade made from stainless steel;

What Gets Rid Of Weeds Permanently?

There is no weed removal tool nor a method known to be 100% effective getting rid of them. Eventually, weeds will grow back, and when they do, you’ll have to deal with them. But as we mentioned before, there are ways you can hinder the weed forthcoming and growth.

Even with specifically designed tools, removing weeds between pavers is still not an easy task. It can be time-consuming, exhausting, and if you don’t remove the weeds properly, extracting the roots too, they can grow back in a short time. Not to mention that if you are not careful, you can end up damaging some pavers in the process.

Besides, there is no point in removing weeds and cleaning the pavers’ surface if you don’t apply a sealer after the process. The weeds will simply grow back afterward. Therefore, the idea is that you hire a specialized company that cleans your driveway, walkway, etc. for you. If you hire someone to do the job, you don’t need to worry about damaging or sealing pavers. They will do it for you!
